Last week the club was pleased to welcome the new Governor for District 1070, Steve Howe. DG visits tend to come with a bit of a health check for the club along with some encouragement, ideas and inspiration.
Like most organisations, Rotary’s membership has been hit by the lockdowns and associated restrictions, which effectively halted recruitment for two years. Membership has been reduced by over 5,000 across the UK and Ireland, and by around 700 in our district alone. Stephen outlined some initiatives being trailed to help us grow again, including Satellite Clubs and Companion Clubs.
In terms of ideas and inspiration, Steve left us with a list of environmental challenges which look practical and achievable, and passed on some of his knowledge about some other Rotary initiatives we might want to join or emulate.
Finally, Steve did a bit of Fund Raising for Rotary’s Polio vaccination campaign, having brought along a limited edition print gifted to every DG around the world by artist Jennifer Jones for fund-raising purposes. A few of use donated £5 to have our photo taken with the painting, edging Steve a little closer to his £1,000 goal.
