Last weeks talk was delivered by James Hassall, the RNIB Community Connection Officer for Lincolnshire and Rutland, accompanied by his colleague John Barnett.
James’ story reminds us that a number of eye conditions can develop at any time of life, causing partial or complete loss of sight. Although James now knows he had an underlying condition since childhood, he was happily employed as a tree surgeon until, after struggling to see while driving, an eye examination lead to him being registered as sight impaired.
James was required to immediately cancel his drivers license. While cancelling his car insurance, he was informed that his work insurance was now also null and void. In just three days, James had lost his livelihood as well as his ability to drive. He was just 40 years old.
After a difficult period James, with support from RNIB staff, realised his previous self-employment had given him transferable skills in admin and customer relations. Eventually he took the role of RNIB Community Connection Officer where he raises awareness, organises fundraising and helps set up support groups.
