Two students from Queen Elizabeth Grammar School were selected to attend the RYLA weekend in February 2023.
They are Charlie and Elle. Charlie will be staying on at QEGS and plans to study AI (artificial intelligence) at university. Elle has now left school to train as a cadet officer in the Merchant Navy and hopes to captain a cruise ship within 10 years!
They were very quiet as Judi and I drove them to the Rotary Centre at Castleton and admitted to being very nervous when they were faced with two dozen other teenagers, most of whom knew at most one other person.
Some icebreaker activities helped relax them and then they were put into teams with each member taking it in turns to lead. Charlie and Elle took us through the activities of each day but they focussed on how they had responded to them.
They both felt that their self confidence had increased by leading activities and by having to speak in public. This was evident in the way they talked to our club and by the way they handled questions.
All ways round, a very successful project thanks to Charlie and Elle.
