At our last meeting, we enjoyed a talk from one of our club’s founding members, John Conyers who detailed the Conyers family’s long history in the local area and his own working life.
Born in Trusthorpe, John is best known for running Conyers DIY & Builders Merchants (previously his father’s firm and now Jewsons) and Greenfield Caravan Park though he has set up further business in partnership with various partners.
It’s always interesting to hear the experiences of those who remember the 1953 floods, and John told us how his families attempt to escape in their van was thwarted when water got into the engine. They managed to stay overnight in a house in Mablethorpe before being rescued the next day by an army ‘Duck’ (a 6 wheeled amphibious truck) and taken to Louth by coach.
John has always enjoyed working hard, including evenings and weekends, but the risk of mixing with the public during the pandemic forced him, and wife Margaret, to retire. As travel restrictions are relaxed, they both look forwards to going on a well-earned cruise (or two!).
