For the second year running, District 1070 will be hosting its Disability Games in Lincoln. After helping out in 2022, we are delighted this year to be entering a team which will be put together by John Sharpe. John joined our meeting this week to introduce himself and educate us on the different events.
The Paralympics began in the UK in 1948 as an event running in parallel to the established Olympics, giving disabled people an opportunity to compete. It was the idea of a doctor who recognised the value of sport in the rehabilitation of those injured during the war.
John has coached and refereed all over the country, and is the chair of Louth Disabilities Activities Forum who organise sports including archery, wheelchair basket ball and table cricket. The club is delighted that he can help us form a team for this year’s games, especially since this will be its last year at Lincoln given that it moves to a new venue every two years.
John also reminded the group that organisations like Linkage always need support, and the rehabilitation and care of stroke victims is also becoming a big issue in the area.
