One of the benefits of being a Rotarian is the opportunity to learn about a broad number of topics from the guest speakers who regularly join our meetings, typically representing their organisation, project or business.
On occasion, one of our members will deliver a talk on a subject they know a great deal about, and this week Canon Chris Lilley sought to demystify the various titles and roles that make up the Anglican Church.
Whilst becoming ordained is a calling, it can also be a job, and indeed a career, with a complex hierarchy of positions. An ordained Deacon may choose to be ordained a second time to become a Priest, able to preside over marriages and Communion. From here some may be chosen to become a Canon of a Cathedral or a Bishop. The later may lead to a seat in the House of Lords which is guaranteed for the Arch Bishops of York and Canterbury, with the available seats being rotated through the 43 diocese as Bishops currently in the Lords retire.
