Rotarians have the opportunity to be involved in a wide variety of projects both near and far. One of our members, Kath Hayes, is an ambassador for the Guildford Rotary Eye Project and gave us an update last night – just take a moment to learn about the amazing work they do.
The charity was founded in 1998 to establish eye surgery units in India (and moving into Africa) which are designed to become self sustaining with solvent patients paying a fee that covers the cost of two further operations for the destitute.
In this way the funding raised can be used to open new hospitals and expand the project which now carries out an amazing 100,000 operations a year.
The operations primarily remove cataracts which can affect those living in poverty at a far younger age than we experience here in the UK.
The resulting blindness can prevent adults from being able to provide for their family, or even children from going to school.
A blind child may be condemned to begging until the day she dies – restore her sight and she will live a completely different life. A donation of just £5 can enable that operation.
That five pound note in your pocket will achieve very little in your local supermarket – if it fell out of your wallet you probably wouldn’t even notice. Donate that same £5 to this project the and it can restore someone’s sight and transform their life forever.
