The Rotary Club of Alford and Mablethorpe supports The Rotary Youth Leadership Award. RYLA is a four day course supporting the leadership development of 14 to 18 year olds which, for our area, takes place at The Rotary Centre in Castleton, Derbyshire. The course involves a series of activities designed to help attendees learn new skills, recognise skills in others, make effective decisions, build confidence, work as part of a team and understand the problems of leadership.
As the sponsoring club, we are not only tasked with nominating the attendees, but also funding their course and transporting them there and back. Rotarian Chris Lilley has taken care of all of the above and raises the funding by carrying out a different challenge each year.
Swimming Across The International Dateline
In 2022 Chris decided he would swim across the International Date Line. This was safely accomplished with a well-timed length of the pool of his cruise ship!

Half Marathon
A sunny and warm October Sunday is great for everyone except those running in the Mablethorpe Half & Full marathons. Chris Lilley (then Club Vice-President) ran in the half-marathon on Sunday 2nd October. He was raising money for the Rotary Club’s work with young people. Chris had hoped to get round the course in 2 hrs. 30 mins, and missed his target by only a few minutes, which was great going considering the conditions. His sponsorship has raised well over £400. Over 700 runners took part in the event and the Club provided a team of marshals to cover the route from the Sutton pull-over to Mablethorpe. Marathon Photos by courtesy of Eagle Radio Group.
