Thanks go to tonight’s speaker Steve Michaeldelis, a member of Woodhall Spa Rotary Club. Steve came to talk to us about the plight of the refugees on the Greek Island of Lesbos. It was a very sombre and hard hitting talk not least because Steve was born on Lesbos and has returned there to witness the situation for himself.
Though some have sent the message that asylum seekers will be welcomed in Europe, Lesbos is on the ‘front line’ of this mass migration and has received little or no support leaving it to the islands residents to do whatever they can. The local Rotary Club (Mytilene Rotary Club) is focusing their efforts on the children with the provision of medicine being a priority.
At the end of the talk Rotarians and guests donated £250 to be sent to the Mytilene Rotary Club and at the following Club Council meeting a further £500 of club funds were pledged. Steve was also able to report that an application for a Rotary grant had been made by one of the local hospitals to allow them to buy new equipment.
