The club recently received a talk from Charlotte Elson, a 17-year-old student from QEGS and the granddaughter of one of the clubs members.
Whilst carrying out her duties as Sutton Carnival Queen, Charlotte felt she had the opportunity to try to make a positive difference in her community. Working with her peers she has set up the Lighthouse Project with the intention of improving the lives and prospects of young people in the area. Some of the groups initial ideas are:
- An ‘Earth Club’ for those interested in environmental issues
- Study sessions to provide an appropriate environment for kids to complete homework
- A Church Group to extend the work of Sutton’s annual Beach Mission
- A Clothing Bank for the free exchange of children’s clothes
- Providing leadership opportunities for young people
Charlotte is already operating a project whereby books in waterproof packaging are hidden around Sutton with a note inviting those who find them to read them and hide them for someone else to discover.
Everything the project does will be in response to the requests of the area’s young people. However some adult input is required in order to set up a charity and locate suitable premises in either Sutton or Mablethorpe.
